THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2020 9 AM

THE HARBOR CENTER

The meeting was called to order at 9:04 am by Board Chairman, Mr. Mark Myers.  Mr. Myers gave the invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ms. Lowrey led Roll Call. Present: Stephanie Berault, Kurt Bozant, Martin Bruno, Kevin Davis, Donna O’Daniels, Martin Patel, Mark Myers, Thomas Shinn, Darrell Smith, and Kathleen Wilkin.  Also present were Kathy Lowrey, Valerie Waeltz, and Mike Caparatto (Heinz and Macaluso LLC Accounting Firm).  Absent: Carrie Calvin. There was a quorum.

Mr. Myers then acknowledged the guests and asked for public comment.  None was given.

The meeting then moved to the reading of the minutes from September 3, 2020. Mr. Bruno motioned to accept, Kurt Bozant seconded. The minutes were unanimously approved.

The Treasurer’s Report was then read. The Harbor Center is currently in a loss due to numerous cancelled events due to COVID-19.  Discussion ensued.  The hotel tax collections are also lower than last year due to COVID.  Ms. Lowrey informed the Board that the Harbor Center is keeping expenses down.  Mr. Smith motioned to accept the report, Mr. Bozant seconded.  The Treasurer’s report was unanimously accepted.

The meeting then moved to Ms. Lowrey providing a COVID-19 update.  To date, the facility has experienced a loss in business of approximately $70,000 due to cancelled events.  She stated that at that time, The Lobby Lounge Concert was still scheduled for November 12.  However, with the Governor’s mandate prohibiting live music, this may change.  The discussion moved to the Friends of the Harbor Center’s scheduled events.  Ms. Lowrey stated that the Senior Appreciation Luncheon, Marine Corp. Band Holiday Concert, Toys for Tots are likely to be cancelled.  The Louisiana Food Truck Festival will hopefully take place.

The furloughed staff members (Shari Appel and Stephen Parker) have returned to work.

New Business was discussed.  Mr. Mike Caparato with Heinz and Macaluso, LLC Accounting Firm gave the Audit Presentation.  The Harbor Center passed with clean/unmodified opinion with no control deficiencies or instances of non-compliance.  Mr. Bruno motioned to accept the audit. Ms. O’Daniels seconded the motion.  The board unanimously accepted the audit.

Ms. Lowrey then gave the General Manager’s report. Mr. Ron Newson, who was recently appointed to the Board, is not eligible to serve based on his permanent residence in Mandeville.  The Harbor Center has been nominated again by Convention South Magazine as one of the “Best of” for the year.  The Harbor Center has won this honor as one of the Best Meeting Venues in the South for the past 9 consecutive years.

Ms. Waeltz then gave the Sales Report.

Ms. Wilkin asked if the Harbor Center has ever been a Polling Place.  Not in the past, however, the St. Tammany Clerk of Court has inquired about using it this year.

Mr. Myers spoke about the Hospice House fundraiser.  He informed the Board that the Lobby Lounge Concert Series is booked for 2021.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:56 am. Mr. Smith motioned to adjourn and Mr. Bozant seconded. It was unanimously agreed upon. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday,

November 5, 2020 at 9 am.
